SANDUSKY, Ohio (Jan. 10, 2011) – Kalahari Resort officially announced it will break ground this March on a $22 million expansion that will more than double the size of its convention center, making Kalahari Resort – Sandusky the only under-one-roof complex in the Midwest to feature a convention center and hotel of this scope. Having filled a void in the region since opening its 95,000-square-foot convention center in 2006, Kalahari Resort plans to significantly increase its meeting capacity from 2,200 to 5,200 attendees.
The 120,000-square-foot addition, which will bring Kalahari's convention center total square footage to 215,000, will include a 38,000-square-foot grand ballroom / expo center, a 12,000-square-foot junior ballroom, 14 meeting rooms, a 4,000-square-foot themed outdoor plaza connected to an indoor ballroom and 30,000 square feet of pre-function space.
"We pride ourselves in striking the right balance of features for convention guests and leisure travelers to ensure that each has a top-notch, yet very different experience," says Todd Nelson, president and owner of Kalahari Resorts who notes that, with this addition, the resort will have added more than $175 million in expansions since opening in 2005. "This expansion further demonstrates our commitment to building a premier meeting and convention venue in Northeast Ohio."
The distinctive meetings philosophy, for which Kalahari Resort is known, will be carried over into the new convention space to include state-of-the-art audio visual, such as interactive whiteboards, video conferencing options, high-end acoustical sound systems, HD-quality projectors and formatted screens, advanced lighting control systems and digital signage. Meeting planners will also appreciate smart design elements including electronically lockable built-in bars and registration areas as well as added warming kitchens in key areas to enhance food and beverage service options.
Kalahari's attention to detail flows through to its décor with its use of earthy colors that are proven to enhance the ability to focus and aid in productivity. Meeting and convention attendees will also be greeted by authentic African artwork, décor and furnishings that have been hand-selected by Kalahari staff in Africa, as well as one-of-a-kind fixtures designed by the resort's private theme shop.
"Many groups we've hosted have been surprised to discover the level of our meetings and event offerings. Although groups want to bring larger statewide or national conventions to us, in the past we were able to accommodate their guest room needs, but we couldn't accommodate their functional space needs," says Maris Brenner, Director of Sales for Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio. "We're excited to open new doors for Kalahari Resort and the surrounding community with our added meeting space which will draw significantly more attendees."
The authentically African-themed resort has generated $27.4 million in taxes and fees for the public sector from 2005 to 2009 thanks to its wide array of offerings that include America's largest indoor waterpark, outdoor waterpark and adventure park, restaurants, shops and Spa Kalahari. Named Business of the Year by the Erie County Chamber of Commerce in 2010, Kalahari Resort, the second largest employer in the area with 1,200 employees, will add 141 full-time jobs and 98 one-time construction jobs and as part of its expansion.
"We support this expansion and are excited to see Kalahari Resort continue to grow and bring added visitors to the area, thus spurring economic growth and adding jobs in Erie County," says Erie County Commissioner Patrick Shenigo. "We're fortunate to have this level of private investment in our community."
Kalahari Resort is committed to working with the Ohio-based contractors and sub-contractors and will invite them to submit bids through its construction manager, Kraemer Brothers of Plain, Wis. The convention center expansion is expected to open December 2011.

Only consumers who become a friend of Kalahari on Facebook will learn the specific gas station locations on the morning of both event days. Kalahari has revealed the cities in which they will be appearing: Chicago, Milwaukee, Toledo, Detroit, Madison, Cleveland and Columbus.

Officially opening on December 20, three new high impact, high thrill waterslides, including the first two indoor Super Loops in America; will see guests propelled at speeds up to 25 mph. All three slides will present a near 60 foot drop, and the Super Loop Sahara Sidewinder slides will take guests on a 250-plus foot journey from high above the roof of the waterpark to the water below. The slides are so tall that Kalahari is literally raising part of its roof to accommodate the slide tower named Tufani Falls. This will allow guests and other passersby a chance to see the slides from the highway as they drive past the resort.
"At Kalahari we are always on the lookout for innovative slides and attractions that will give our guests an experience they’ve never had before," said Travis Nelson, Chief Slide Tester at Kalahari Resorts. "These three new slides will give guests the thrill of their life! Guests will start the ride standing up in a tube before sliding through a "trap-door" and down a near vertical drop for a truly hair raising experience."
For those not quite old enough to experience the thrill of the Super Loop, Kalahari is also installing a state-of-the-art Kid’s Play Zone named Tiko’s Watering Hole for children of all ages. The pool will contain at least 10 children’s slides as well as a number of interactive African animal figures including Grey Crowned Cranes that will act as big squirt guns, elephants and an interactive Baobab rain tree that will gush water like rain.

Kalahari Resort Celebrates 10 Years of Vacation Adventures; Preps for Summer Record
Memorial Weekend Splashtacular Event Planned for Unveiling of New Features
Download PDF
WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (May 29, 2010) – There's a decade of fun brewing at Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Having hosted more than 10 million visitors since Kalahari opened as a 100-room hotel with a 60,000-square-foot indoor waterpark in May 2000, the resort is now home to a 756-room convention/waterpark/theme park complex. Capitalizing on the trend of travelers taking drive-to regional getaways versus fly-to vacations, Kalahari has consistently evolved over the last 10 years, setting the bar for industry innovation and keeping guests coming back.
The resort expansions began in 2002, when the company doubled the size of its indoor waterpark and added major attractions such as the region's first Master Blaster water coaster. In 2004, Kalahari was the first in the U.S. to install the FlowRider, a simulated surfing ride, in its indoor waterpark. And more recently, during the economic downturn, the resort boldly moved forward with plans to build an Indoor Theme Park complete with an indoor Ferris wheel, go-cart tracks and climbing wall. Over the last 10 years Kalahari Resort has invested more than $129 million into resort expansion projects.
"There's no question that Kalahari Resort has been a major asset to Wisconsin Tourism since opening 10 years ago," said Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle. "We commend the resort for drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists to Wisconsin, providing more than 1,200 jobs for Wisconsin residents, and for stimulating our economy now more than ever."
Kalahari has continued to enjoy occupancy far above the industry average and anticipates a busy summer. Beginning with "The Kalahari Splashtacular" celebration on Saturday, May 29, Kalahari guests will enjoy an unveiling of several new features, including a guest experience, a crew of new characters, and a new hip-hop theme song.
"It's hard to believe that it has been a decade since we opened our doors," said Todd Nelson, who owns and operates Kalahari Resort along with his wife and five children. "What an amazing opportunity we've had to grow in this industry and to provide a memorable experience for both our leisure and convention guests. We can't wait to see what the next 10 years will bring."
In addition to physical initiatives, Kalahari Resort has conducted fund-raising events and made significant charitable contributions to several organizations in its first 10 years, namely the UW Carbone Center and Wisconsin Dells High School music program. In 2007, Kalahari purchased Trappers Turn Golf Club to offer sports packages to its guests, and in April 2010 purchased part ownership in Crystal Grand Theatre in Wisconsin Dells to offer yet another above-and-beyond entertainment option to the region's residents and visitors.
